The six New Zealand fashion design students from AUT and Massey Universities will be kick-starting their careers in France during the Rugby World Cup. The students were challenged to redesign the Manu Samoa Rugby jersey and the winning designs show innovation and insight into fashion design and the Samoan culture.

The winning students are:

Massey University Charlotte Ferguson (Tauranga)
AUT University Natasha Singh (Auckland)
Natasha Patel (Auckland)
Brigitta Indriani Putri (Auckland)
Jamie Lee-Rowe (Otaki)
Suzie Acton-Adams (Ashburton)

Hailwood, who studied at Massey University and has been lauded as NZ’s most promising young fashion designer, was impressed with the group: “As the homeland for Pacific culture, NZ fashion designers really get it. These designs show a good use of cultural elements combining a myriad of ideas.”

“The top six exhibit a good standard of design, and stand apart because of all the separate elements of rugby and Samoan culture working together. They are visually beautiful and very well made, show traditional techniques and tattooing, and retain a commercial feel.”

PUMA will honour the overall winner by displaying their customized design at PUMA retail stores during the 2007 Rugby World Cup and featuring them on PUMA.com.

Puma is sponsoring the national Samoan team at the Rugby World Cup for the first time. Samoa kicks off play on 9 September against South Africa at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Also in Samoa’s group are the USA, England and Tonga. The Rugby World Cup takes place in 11 cities across France, Wales and Scotland from 7 September – 20 October.
