Press Release Samoa Rugby Union 27th October 2011

The Samoa Rugby Union issues this statement to enlighten the public of the work of the SRU, and on some of its recent achievements and roles including Manu Samoa. Reports in the media discrediting the Samoa Rugby Union and its Board potentially damages the image and the morale of the Samoan Rugby Union. As an organization, we acknowledge that constant improvement and renewal must take place and will conduct the usual review process as performed for all SRU teams after all major competitions. Any criticisms received by the SRU Board will be addressed in the Review Process of the RWC.
The Board of the Samoa Rugby Union and Executives is made of representatives of its affiliated Unions plus one independent member, and are all unpaid volunteers.

Manu Samoa Collectors Series: 1947

Mata'afa Faumuina Fiame Mulinuu II - Manu Samoa Center 1947

Aigaletaule’ale’ā F. Tauafiafi

Samoa’s 1947 team played just the one test and won. The match against Tonga which took place at Apia Park on 9 August we won 5-3.
Fourteen players earned their first and only cap this year donning the famous blue jersey once. This is not surprising as the next test match for Samoa took place eight years later in 1955.
The Tongan team according to the history books would have been an experienced group as not one was making an international debut. This makes the 1947 Manu Samoa victory a meritorious achievement.

Classic upsets in Rugby World Cup history

Samoa’s recent upset victory over Australia has highlighted the rich history of upsets from the lower ranked teams at Rugby World Cup.

Samoa’s stunning win in Sydney whet the appetite for the titanic clashes to come in Pool D of RWC 2011 and cast the mind back to their two great RWC victories over Wales at RWC 1991 and RWC 1999. RWC is littered with upsets and smaller teams performing magnificently on Rugby’s biggest stage.
